Senior Backend Engineer - Security Subsystem

About the role

Join Open Digital Services, the technology arm of Santander Group, as a Senior Backend Engineer focused on the Security Subsystem. You will design, build, and operate critical backend services that protect customer journeys across multiple products and markets.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, deploy, and operate secure backend APIs and services.
• Translate requirements into maintainable designs and incremental delivery plans with senior engineers and team leads.
• Write clean, well‑tested code and enhance automated testing, documentation, and developer workflows.
• Build observability into services and use logs, metrics, and traces to monitor production behavior.
• Participate in on‑call rotation, investigate incidents, and drive root‑cause remediation.
• Contribute to data modelling, caching, asynchronous processing, resilience, and performance improvements.
• Engage in code and design reviews and progressively own larger service areas.

Required profile

• Minimum 4 years of professional experience building backend applications.
• Strong understanding of APIs, data structures, databases, testing, version control, and basic distributed‑systems concepts.
• Experience debugging software in production‑like environments.
