Senior Software Engineer (Backend) - Digital Health

About the role

Lingo, a digital health platform built by Abbott, processes large volumes of real-time biosensor data and turns it into health insights for its users. It is looking for a Senior Software Engineer (Backend) to design, build and optimise its backend systems so they are scalable, resilient and secure. The role works closely with Product, Mobile, Platform/SRE and Data/ML teams, and involves architecture discussions, project leadership and mentoring junior engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable microservices and APIs for real-time biosensor data processing.
• Implement event-driven integrations with messaging/streaming systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ) and analytics pipelines.
• Work with SRE on observability, performance and operational excellence of backend services.
• Take part in architecture and design reviews on service boundaries, data models and communication patterns.
• Optimise services for low latency, high throughput and cost efficiency.
• Apply privacy-by-design and security standards in line with HIPAA/GDPR compliance.
• Maintain clean, testable code and set engineering standards.
• Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, pair programming and knowledge sharing.
• Troubleshoot production issues and contribute to incident response and post-mortems.

Required profile

• 5-8 years of backend engineering experience with distributed, cloud-native systems.
• Strong microservices and API design skills (REST); GraphQL/gRPC is a plus.
• Hands-on experience with Kafka or RabbitMQ.
• Knowledge of secure coding and compliance (HIPAA, GDPR or similar).
• Solid understanding of performance, scalability and async data processing.
• Preferred: experience with analytics and ML pipelines, API gateways, authentication/authorization and rate limiting, and a background in digital health, IoT or mission-critical platforms.

Required skills

• Kubernetes in production and familiarity with service mesh concepts.
• Backend languages such as Java, Kotlin or Python.
• Preferred: Azure/AWS/GCP and Terraform/Helm.
