Group Head of Sanctions and Export Controls

About the role

The Group Head of Sanctions and Export Controls will design, implement and oversee Ebury’s global compliance framework for sanctions and export controls. Reporting to senior leadership, this role ensures that all products, services and cross‑border transactions meet international regulatory requirements while supporting commercial growth.

Key responsibilities

• Design and maintain a global sanctions and export controls framework, policies and risk appetite statements aligned with Ebury’s expansion goals.
• Establish export control protocols for trade finance and cross‑border payments, including screening for dual‑use goods, military end‑use and restricted trade corridors (EAR, ITAR, UK Strategic Export Controls).
• Lead and develop a global team of regional sanctions managers and advisory officers, fostering a culture of compliance and continuous learning.
• Provide regular, data‑driven reporting to the Board and executive leadership on risk exposure, geopolitical changes and control effectiveness.
• Manage relationships with regulators such as OFSI, OFAC, EU authorities and local FIUs, and lead responses to inquiries, audits and examinations.
• Act as the final escalation point for complex, high‑risk or politically sensitive sanctions and export control issues.
• Collaborate with Financial Crime Tech and Product teams to guide the strategic direction of screening and monitoring systems.

Required profile

• Extensive experience designing and operating global sanctions and export control programmes.
• Proven leadership of multi‑regional compliance teams.
• Deep knowledge of international sanctions regimes and export control regulations (e.g., OFAC, OFSI, EU, EAR, ITAR, UK Strategic Export Controls).
• Strong ability to engage with senior executives, boards and regulatory authorities.
