Tech Lead - Specialist Java Backend Developer

About the role

The Lead Java Backend Developer for RBC Caribbean's Digital Banking IT Group will design, develop, and architect mission‑critical backend services and APIs that power internet banking, mobile banking, and origination applications. As a technical leader, you will guide architectural decisions, mentor development teams, and drive cloud‑native modernization initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Lead technical design reviews and architectural decisions for backend systems and microservices.
• Design and develop high‑performance Java applications, REST APIs, and microservices using Spring Boot and the Spring Framework.
• Establish and enforce coding standards, design patterns, and best practices across teams.
• Conduct feasibility studies and provide recommendations for large‑scale projects.
• Perform comprehensive testing, code reviews, and performance tuning for large‑scale systems.
• Drive modernization and cloud‑native transformation of legacy platforms (e.g., Netbank, Mobile Banking).
• Research emerging technologies and assess their business impact.
• Participate in vendor evaluations, technology assessments, and due‑diligence exercises.
• Promote DevOps practices and infrastructure‑as‑code initiatives.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Software Engineering, Computer Science, IT Engineering, or a related field.
• 10+ years of professional software development experience.
• Proven expertise in Java (Java 11+), OOP, design patterns, and microservices architecture.
• Strong experience with Spring Framework, Spring Boot, and API‑first design.
• Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and container orchestration.
