Tech Lead - Specialist Java Backend Developer

About the role

The Lead Java Backend Developer for RBC Caribbean's Digital Banking IT Group will design, develop, and architect mission‑critical backend services and APIs that power internet, mobile, and origination banking applications. As a technical leader, you will provide architectural direction, mentor development teams, and drive cloud‑native modernization initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Lead technical design reviews and make architectural decisions for backend microservices.
• Design, develop, and maintain high‑performance Java applications using Spring Boot and the Spring Framework.
• Establish and enforce coding standards, design patterns, and best practices across teams.
• Conduct feasibility studies and advise senior management on large‑scale projects.
• Develop scalable REST APIs and ensure quality through automated unit, integration, and functional testing.
• Optimize applications for performance, usability, and maintainability.
• Drive modernization of legacy systems toward cloud‑native, microservices‑first solutions.
• Research emerging technologies and assess their impact on business strategy.
• Participate in vendor evaluations, technology assessments, and due‑diligence exercises.
• Promote DevOps practices and infrastructure‑as‑code initiatives.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Software Engineering, Computer Science, IT Engineering, or a related field.
• 10+ years of professional software development experience.
• Proven expertise in Java development (Java 11+), OOP, and design patterns.
• Extensive experience with microservices architecture, Spring Framework, and Spring Boot.
• Strong background in cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and container orchestration.
• Hands‑on experience with DevOps tools, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing.
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams, mentor developers, and drive technical excellence.
