Underwriter - Financial Lines

About the role

Starr Insurance Companies is looking for an Underwriter for its Financial Lines team in Spain. The role reports to the Financial Lines Manager and helps manage underwriting risk exposures through aggregate limits and reinsurance, while writing profitable business in line with the underwriting plan.

Key responsibilities

• Write profitable business according to business plans, focusing on D&O for commercial and financial institutions, PI, crime and BBB lines.
• Analyse claims experience to project future results and obtain sign-off on business exceeding authority levels or falling below rating guidelines.
• Keep underwriting documentation accurate, complete and up to date, and ensure policy wordings and clauses are slip referenced and agreed.
• Ensure accounts are contract certain at binding, log bound, quoted, working and declined risks, and follow up outstanding quotes and renewals with brokers.
• Contribute to the Starr Spain strategy in Continental Europe and Iberia, and help develop local wordings with the UK and Continental Europe UW team.
• Build broker and client relationships, review internal audit and expert review reports, handle renewals and manage joint venture aggregations.
• Support raw data generation to report the RM and CUO for the reinsurance strategy.

Required profile

• 3+ years of relevant experience.
• Advanced knowledge of a specific class of business (D&O, FI, PI).
• University degree (Law or Business Administration) with the ability to read and understand company financial statements.
• Fluent written and spoken English; Portuguese and/or Italian desirable.

Required skills

• Knowledge of market wordings, clauses and reinsurance practices.
• Up-to-date knowledge of claims to inform underwriting decisions.
