Payment Operations Manager

About the role

Monzo is expanding its payments capabilities across Europe and needs a dynamic problem‑solver to design, build and run its European payment operations. Based in Madrid, you will own Payments Product Operations in Spain while supporting the launch of new markets.

Key responsibilities

• Support partner selection and manage relationships with new payment partners and schemes.
• Lead implementation projects, onboarding, and compliance processes for payment schemes.
• Collaborate with payments engineering and EU product teams to launch and operate new payment systems.
• Design and scale back‑office processes for EU payment operations.
• Prioritise post‑launch issues and drive continuous improvement.
• Establish performance monitoring and SLA management for partners and internal operations.

Required profile

• Experience with payment systems and schemes, especially in Spain.
• Knowledge of European banking and payments regulations.
• Self‑starter with strong ownership, able to thrive in ambiguous environments.
• Proven ability to manage relationships with multiple suppliers.
• Strategic thinker who can balance short‑ and long‑term trade‑offs.
• Comfortable working closely with engineering teams on technical details.
• Track record of solving complex problems and managing performance metrics.
