About the role
The installation engineering team develops installation processes and tools so that onshore wind turbines can be installed safely, efficiently and economically. The Lead Installation Engineer takes responsibility for the full technical development of installation capabilities and tools, from defining the problem and empathy gathering through design and field validation, until a complete tool package is handed off to regional installation teams. The scope includes major component lifting equipment for machine heads, hubs and other components, and drivetrain-related capabilities such as geared turning drives, alignment equipment and lifting and rigging.
Key responsibilities
- Manage tooling development projects through the NPI process, covering design, prototyping, development, validation and final documentation of installation tooling and processes (e.g., lift beams, site fixtures).
- Lead a cross-functional core team to define requirements, develop concepts and create technical specifications for the mechanical design of tooling and processes.
- Manage suppliers to finalize design and manufacture the proposed technology.
- Generate concepts that optimize the end-user experience, using systems thinking to understand the operations needed for an installation, and incorporate end-user feedback and safety and ergonomic considerations.
- Conduct design reviews, FMEAs, structural assessments and other technical deliverables with chief and principal engineers to meet or exceed GE and industry safety standards.
- Create design packages and hand them off to regional installation and Global Tech Operations teams.
- Support on-site validations and help train installation leaders and technicians on new tools and processes.
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline (mechanical preferred).
- GE Renewable Energy Edison Engineer status, including completion of the corporate training for the Edison Engineering Development Program.
- Familiarity with basic industrial tooling, CAD and finite element analysis.
- Ability to work with heavy components, cranes and rigging in a hands-on environment, and willingness to climb wind turbines and work at heights.
- Willingness to travel globally up to 15% of the time.
- Knowledge of wind turbine products, familiarity with empathic design, and demonstrated technical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Required skills
- CAD and finite element analysis
- PC proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Access
