Writing Systems Intern - R&D (3D Printing)

About the role

HP Barcelona hosts the Multi Jet Fusion and MetalJet 3D printing businesses, covering R&D, Product Management and Operations. The Writing Systems team combines the technologies behind 3D printing to ensure consistent part quality and system performance. This internship lets you learn how engineering disciplines and subsystems interact at system level, contribute to real engineering challenges and work with multidisciplinary R&D teams.

To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled at a university in Spain, stay enrolled until the end of the internship and be able to sign an internship agreement with your university. Start date is February 2027, with participation until June-July 2027. The internship is paid, lasts 4 to 12 months and can be part-time (4 hours/day) or full-time (8 hours/day).

Key responsibilities

• Support the development and optimization of print modes for different materials, agents and 3D printing applications.
• Help plan and run experiments to understand process behavior and its impact on part quality.
• Analyze experimental data and printer performance to identify trends, characterize issues and support technical decisions.
• Contribute to data analysis, automation and process control improvements to boost efficiency, repeatability and robustness.
• Take part in troubleshooting and root-cause investigations of print-quality and system-level issues.
• Work with Materials, Mechanical, Thermal, Firmware and Quality teams, and test and validate new materials, functionalities and printing solutions.
• Document and share results, conclusions and learnings with the team.

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Physics or a related technical field.
• Fluent English, spoken and written.
• Interest in materials, manufacturing and 3D printing; previous additive manufacturing experience is a plus but not required.

Required skills

• Data analysis and statistics, including hypothesis testing, correlation, regression and basic modelling.
• Familiarity with Design of Experiments (DOE).
• Python and Excel for data processing, statistical analysis, visualization and automation; process monitoring and control knowledge is a plus.
• Good technical documentation and communication skills.
