AI Engineer Java

About the role

Syngenta Crop Protection is looking for an AI Engineer Java in Madrid to strengthen the Java layer of its internal developer platform: templates, shared libraries, runtime standards and quality tooling. The role sits at the intersection of advanced technology and agricultural R&D, working with engineers, product leaders and scientific stakeholders to accelerate the digital capabilities behind more sustainable agriculture.

Key responsibilities

• Apply deep expertise in modern Java 17+, Spring Boot and Maven/Gradle to deliver durable, scalable outcomes.
• Build shared libraries and service templates, and apply AI-assisted engineering with rigorous evaluation.
• Use GitLab CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes and Terraform to deliver scalable results.
• Apply test engineering with JUnit, Mockito and contract testing, and use documentation-as-code and agent-consumable interfaces.
• Design and architect scalable solutions that integrate AI capabilities with existing Java-based systems.
• Optimise application performance, monitor system health and implement observability across the platform.
• Review code, mentor junior engineers and set best practices for AI-assisted development.
• Collaborate with engineering, product and scientific teams to turn complex needs into practical solutions.

Required profile

• Demonstrable experience in modern Java 17+, Spring Boot, Maven/Gradle, shared libraries, service templates and internal platform thinking.
• Proven expertise in designing and architecting scalable, distributed systems.
• Strong background in application performance optimisation and observability.
• Experience reviewing code, mentoring engineers and setting quality standards.
• Fluent written and spoken English; strong communication and influence across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Bonus points: agriculture, life sciences, scientific computing or regulated enterprise experience; multi-team platform experience; distributed, international organisation experience.
