Database Consultant - Enterprise Assessment and Modernization

About the role

Kyndryl is looking for a Database Consultant to join its Database Consulting team on a large-scale enterprise database assessment, optimization and modernization project. The client runs about 1,700 relational databases across many environments and platforms, mostly on-premises but also in the cloud, with a heterogeneous mix of Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL and IBM Db2. The consultant combines DBA expertise with analytical and consulting skills.

Key responsibilities

• Take part in the technical assessment of the database estate, including discovery, inventory and characterization of platforms, versions, configurations, lifecycle status and operational health.
• Identify risks and improvement opportunities in performance, capacity, availability, backup and recovery, high availability, security, monitoring, versions and configuration.
• Analyze large volumes of data, define technical recommendations and action plans, and classify databases by risk, criticality and remediation needs.
• Take part in remediation, modernization and rationalization initiatives, upgrades, migrations, consolidations and cross-platform moves.
• Troubleshoot performance and availability issues, design scripts to automate discovery, assessment and administration, and contribute to standards and best practices.
• Prepare technical reports and executive presentations, collaborate with infrastructure, application, cloud and operations teams, and mentor junior team members.

Required profile

• 3+ years of experience as a DBA, Database Consultant or in a similar role.
• Experience in large-scale enterprise environments and with large database estates.
• Hands-on experience with at least one of the listed database technologies and knowledge of other relational platforms.
• Previous experience in database assessment, transformation or modernization projects is highly valued.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to turn technical information into clear recommendations and to mentor others.

Required skills

• One or more of: Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, IBM Db2.
• DBA skills such as performance tuning, backup and recovery, monitoring, capacity planning, patching, migrations and configuration analysis.
• Scripting and automation with SQL/T-SQL/PL/SQL, PowerShell, Bash and/or Python.
• Cloud experience with Microsoft Azure, AWS or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is an asset.
