Lead Software Engineer – Lending Platform (Spain)

About the role

Abound is a fintech redefining consumer lending in the UK and beyond, using AI and Open Banking data to understand customers' full financial picture. It is expanding into new markets and is looking for a hands-on Lead Software Engineer to lead technology delivery for Abound Spain. The role adapts, deploys and operates the lending platform in Spain, meeting local business, operational and regulatory requirements while staying aligned with the global technology strategy. It reports to the Spain Director and the Chief Product Officer and combines software engineering, solution architecture, technical leadership and team management.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage a small engineering team, supporting their growth through coaching, mentoring and regular feedback.
• Act as the technology owner for Spain, defining solution architectures and leading the implementation of new capabilities for the Spanish business.
• Evaluate, integrate and manage third-party providers covering payments, Open Banking, customer communications, fraud prevention and collections.
• Work with Product, Risk, Operations and Compliance to turn business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
• Support engineers through code reviews, pairing and technical guidance, and help structure delivery (sprint planning, estimation, retrospectives).
• Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from design and implementation through testing, deployment, monitoring and production support.
• Provide second-line production support during business hours and contribute to Business Continuity Planning, Disaster Recovery and operational resilience.

Required profile

• Strong experience building and maintaining production systems in Python, and experience leading engineering teams or complex technical projects.
• Hands-on engineer who enjoys solving technical problems while providing technical leadership.
• Experience designing solution architectures for business-critical systems and adapting shared platforms to local market, operational and regulatory requirements.
• Experience integrating third-party providers and collaborating with business stakeholders.
• Experience with AWS or equivalent cloud platforms; experience in consumer lending, retail banking or regulated financial services is highly desirable.

The position is based in Madrid with a hybrid arrangement of 3 days per week on site in the Las Rozas office.
