Mechanical Design Engineer – Space Mechanisms

About the role

OCCAM Space is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to develop reliable, manufacturable space hardware for satellite and launch vehicle separation systems. The role involves taking ownership of hardware from concept through launch and, where applicable, orbital operations.

Key responsibilities

• Take technical ownership of hardware development from initial concept through manufacturing, integration, testing, launch and orbital operations.
• Define and maintain the technical roadmap for the hardware throughout its lifecycle.
• Determine design loads and develop efficient structural solutions using first‑principles analysis.
• Perform and document hand calculations, finite element analysis (FEA) and kinematic analysis to substantiate design decisions.
• Identify, specify and select commercial off‑the‑shelf components that meet technical and functional requirements.
• Incorporate manufacturing considerations early, evaluating machining, forming, welding, composites and other methods.
• Drive technical maturity of the hardware, coordinating with stakeholders and adjacent engineering teams.
• Document and communicate design assumptions, constraints, interfaces and requirements.
• Coordinate with related design teams to ensure compatibility of adapters, dispensers, release actuators and subsystems.
• Produce engineering drawings and technical specifications for manufacturing, inspection and integration.
• Prepare test plans and provide technical support during structural qualification and acceptance testing.
• Work with internal manufacturing and external suppliers to procure materials, manufacture parts and assemble hardware.
• Update designs, drawings, analyses and documentation based on test results and continuous improvements.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Industrial Engineering.
• Proven experience in mechanical design for space or aerospace hardware.
• Ability to lead hardware development through all lifecycle phases.

• Competitive salary €45,000–€70,000 gross per year.
