Senior Machine Learning Engineer

About the role

Roche Diagnostics Solutions (RDS), part of Roche's Computational Science & Informatics (CSI) unit, is looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer in Sant Cugat del Vallès. The role acts as a technical lead, driving the long-term planning, architecture and design of initiatives such as the core ML and Data Platform, and provides the infrastructure and tooling that Data Scientists need to carry out their research and production work. It is an on-site position with no relocation assistance.

Key responsibilities

• Act as the central technical liaison between project stakeholders and the Data Science team, owning the integration and deployment of algorithms and ML models into production workflows.
• Design, build and scale cloud-native and hybrid data and ML platforms (MLOps) for the Data Science team.
• Plan, architect and develop long-term enterprise tooling and infrastructure to speed up ML model research, training and evaluation.
• Own the end-to-end software and data architecture within Data Science initiatives, driving specification, implementation and testing.
• Gather requirements from data-focused profiles, continuously improve the ML platform and mentor peers.

Required profile

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a closely related technical field.
• Extensive software engineering experience with Python, including application architecture and design patterns.
• Adherence to coding best practices (e.g. TDD, ATDD), rigorous testing and version control.
• Good understanding of complete ML workflows and hands-on experience provisioning the supporting infrastructure.
• Experience with various storage technologies and their trade-offs (relational databases, NoSQL, object storage).
• Collaborative technical leader who enjoys complex data projects and mentoring others.

Required skills

• Python data ecosystem (NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn), Linux, ETL and MLOps tools.
• HPC and AWS-based data engineering and analytics.
• Nice to have: life sciences domain knowledge (sequencing, PCR, bioinformatics, digital healthcare), LLMs and agentic systems experience, AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional, and experience in large, globally distributed enterprises.
