Deputy MLRO - Spain

About the role

Wise is looking for a financial crime expert to help set up its Spanish branch from the ground up. As Deputy MLRO, you will support the Head of Compliance/MLRO and the Country Manager in designing a robust financial crime compliance framework covering AML, CTF and sanctions, with controls aligned to Spanish regulatory obligations. The role works closely with first-line teams, product development and global stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Depute for the MLRO when needed, overseeing financial crime operations and risks, and liaising with authorities and auditors
• Oversee suspicious activity reporting, including setting standards for internal reports, making final decisions and submitting SARs to SEPBLAC
• Maintain the local financial crime policy framework and horizon-scan new regulations and guidance
• Challenge First Line of Defence teams on controls and advise product teams on compliance for new products
• Coordinate responses to requests from Internal Audit and the External Expert, and create risk assessment reports
• Support regulatory reporting content and act as liaison to the Financial Intelligence Unit and law enforcement

Required profile

• 7+ years of experience in financial crime compliance, specifically AML/CTF, in fast-paced environments
• Experience in project management
• Knowledge of Spanish financial crime regulations, risk management frameworks and control environments (KYC/CDD, transaction monitoring, SARs)
• Demonstrated experience designing and challenging processes and controls
• Strong communication skills and the ability to argue persuasively for regulatory requirements and risks
