Director of Institutional Relations and Communications

About the role

The Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) is looking for an internationally‑oriented leader to shape its external image and stakeholder relationships. Reporting to the Executive Leadership team, the Director of Institutional Relations and Communications will act as a strategic partner to the Director and Managing Director, translating the Institute’s vision into coherent communication and engagement programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute communication strategies that reinforce ICFO’s mission, culture and global reputation.
• Lead and integrate the institutional relations, media, science‑communication and community‑engagement teams.
• Support high‑level interactions with governments, funding agencies, academic partners, industry and international organisations.
• Oversee media relations, public outreach, events and philanthropic initiatives to broaden the Institute’s network of ambassadors.
• Foster a vibrant scientific culture and strengthen community cohesion across researchers, students, staff and alumni.

Required profile

• Proven senior‑level experience in communications, public affairs or institutional relations, preferably within a research or scientific environment.
• Strong strategic thinking, discretion and the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; additional languages are a plus.
