Legal Counsel

About the role

AXA XL is seeking a Legal Counsel to support its French legal team and act as a trusted business partner for underwriting and operations units. The role involves providing day‑to‑day legal advice, reviewing contracts, and ensuring compliance with French and European insurance regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Senior Legal Counsel with legal queries from local underwriting, operations, and international colleagues.
• Serve as the primary contact for underwriting departments, offering legal guidance on insurance and reinsurance matters.
• Review, draft, and validate a variety of contractual documents, including reinsurance contracts, confidentiality agreements, mandates, brokerage protocols, and commercial contracts.
• Propose legally sound solutions that meet client and partner needs while complying with applicable law.
• Manage project timelines, especially for new product launches and monitoring.
• Conduct legal watch activities, update internal legal culture, and deliver training to underwriters, assistants, and claims handlers.
• Support multinational program issues and coordinate with external counsel as required.
• Report to the Head of Legal France & Southern Europe.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in French private law, preferably with a focus on insurance law.
• Professional experience in an insurance company, brokerage firm, or law firm.
• Broad knowledge of insurance, reinsurance, contract, and tort law.
• Excellent written communication, especially for contractual matters.
• Fluency in English and French, both spoken and written.
