Power Systems Engineer - Protection & Simulation

About the role

Gevernova is looking for a Power Systems Engineer in Zamudio who will run advanced real-time simulators and carry out Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) on protection relays and controllers. The engineer works with international engineering teams, troubleshoots complex system behaviour and contributes to a wide range of projects.

Key responsibilities

• Run HIL tests on a real-time digital simulator, including Factory Acceptance Tests, and analyse and troubleshoot simulation scenarios.
• Carry out engineering studies such as short circuit, load flow, arc-flash and protective device coordination studies.
• Create complex relay setting files for GE and third-party protective relays, including programming of protection and control elements, complex control logic and communications settings.
• Develop test setups, test plans and test cases, including wiring diagrams and relay configurations, and prepare test and project reports.
• Take part in preparing technical papers for conferences and other venues.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree (Master's or higher preferred) in Electrical, Computer or Power Systems Engineering.
• At least 2 years of experience in protection, control and automation applications.
• Understanding of power system protection relays, automation, control and communication protocols.
• Strong learning skills, collaborative style and customer focus.

Required skills

• Preferred: experience with RTDS or Opal RT simulation platforms.
• Preferred: study software such as PSCAD, PSSE, Power Factory, ASPEN and CAPE.
• Preferred: knowledge of IEC61850, DNP and Modbus protocols, and of transmission, distribution and smart grid standards.
• Preferred: commissioning and testing experience with Doble / Omicron equipment.
