Principal Engineer – HV Primary Substations

About the role

AECOM is looking for an experienced Principal Engineer for HV Primary Substations to join its Transmission & Distribution (T&D) team. The engineer leads and engages with clients to deliver technically challenging overhead line (OHL) design projects, covering primary electrical systems for transmission and distribution projects, including overhead lines up to 400kV.

Key responsibilities

• Design primary substation systems (AIS/GIS, transformers, circuit breakers, busbars, switchgear, disconnectors) up to 400kV
• Prepare single-line diagrams, general arrangement layouts, equipment sizing and layout plans
• Perform short-circuit calculations, fault current analysis and equipment protection design
• Design earthing systems, lightning protection and HVDC/HVAC systems including converter stations
• Develop transformer layouts, optimise substation layouts and review control and protection systems
• Coordinate with civil teams on foundations, steel structures and cable routes
• Produce equipment specifications, bills of materials and procurement support
• Prepare interconnection diagrams, cable schedules and auxiliary system designs (cooling, auxiliary power, batteries)
• Design underground cables and coordinate with vendors and contractors

Required profile

• Master of Engineering degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate engineering discipline
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Professional Engineer (PE) licence or equivalent
• 10+ years of experience preferred
• Experience leading large design teams on grid substation design in a global consultancy preferred
• Mandatory experience in HV plant design for large EHV grid substations
• Experience with grid utilities highly desirable; exposure to IEC, IEEE, ANSI and Australian standards preferred
