Principal Software Engineer - Global UX - Application - Platform

About the role

Elastic is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to provide technical leadership for its Global UX engineering team, which owns Elastic UI (EUI), the design system and React component library behind every major Elastic product. The role sets technical direction for how the design system scales across dozens of consuming teams, mentors engineers and acts as the senior voice connecting design intent to component architecture. It is a hands-on leadership role involving writing and reviewing code and making architectural decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Set technical direction for component architecture, API design, theming, accessibility and long-term maintainability of EUI
• Own key technical decisions such as composable patterns, breaking changes and migrations, versioning and token architecture
• Review designs, unblock engineers and raise the bar on accessibility, performance and cross-browser correctness
• Partner with design leadership to turn design language into documented, reusable component APIs
• Work with consuming teams to drive adoption of the design system and fix friction points
• Mentor engineers through code review, design critique and pairing, and help develop future senior and staff engineers
• Represent the team in cross-functional planning and explore how AI can improve the design-to-code workflow

Required profile

• Deep, hands-on experience building and operating React and TypeScript component libraries or design systems at scale
• Technical leadership track record: setting architecture and quality standards without needing formal authority
• Experience designing composable APIs (compound components, render props, headless components, theming/token systems)
• Experience managing a widely consumed library: releases, deprecations, migration paths and documentation
• Ability to partner with designers and communicate trade-offs to engineers and non-technical stakeholders
• History of mentoring engineers and working transparently in a distributed team
