Principal Software Engineering Lead - Clinical Trial Site and Investigator

Job description
About the role
Evinova, a health tech business within the AstraZeneca Group, is hiring a Principal Software Engineering Lead for the Unified Trial Solution product, covering Clinical Trial Site and Investigator. This is not a traditional management role: the person is expected to write and review code, make architectural decisions and lead by building alongside the team. The role owns the technical direction and delivery of the product areas while leading a multi-squad engineering organization, with a significant share of time spent in the codebase.
Key responsibilities
- Hands-on technical leadership (50%+ of time): review pull requests, give code-level feedback, enforce engineering quality standards, and write production-ready code for complex platform components.
- Own architectural decisions across APIs, data models, service boundaries and infrastructure, and partner with engineers to solve complex problems while coaching and mentoring.
- Drive adoption of AI-assisted development tools and workflows, and integrate AI tools into daily development so that AI-generated code is reviewed and tested to the same standards as human-written code.
- Define and maintain standards for testing, CI/CD, observability and deployment.
- Lead, mentor and develop a multi-squad engineering organization, conduct technical interviews, and manage performance around quality, impact and delivery.
- Work with Product Owners, Product Managers, Design and Clinical Operations to turn clinical and business needs into scalable solutions, influence product direction and drive predictable delivery against quarterly objectives.
Required profile
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with a proven record of delivering production systems.
- 3+ years of experience leading engineering teams while staying hands-on with software development.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Preferred: experience delivering AI/ML capabilities in production, experience building software for healthcare professionals or clinical trial operations, familiarity with GxP and SaMD, and clinical research industry experience.
Required skills
- Deep expertise in at least one stack: React / React Native, Node.js, Java or AWS Cloud Services.
- Strong architectural leadership across frontend, backend and infrastructure.
- Practical experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude or Cursor.
- Understanding of Agile, Scrum, Kanban or SAFe.
The role is hybrid, with a minimum of three days per week in the office. Applications close on 12 November 2026.
