Senior Software Engineer - Backend (JVM)

Job description
About the role
Seqera, behind Nextflow and the Seqera Platform, is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join its Unified Compute team. You will own the application layer that turns computational capability into something customers can configure, run and pay for, covering Seqera Intelligent Compute, its integration with the Seqera Platform and the metering and billing behind them. The team has three engineers alongside you.
Key responsibilities
- Build and own the integration between Seqera Intelligent Compute and the Seqera Platform.
- Own compute environments: let customers provision compute across AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, HPC schedulers and GPU executions, handling the differences between backends.
- Work with cloud provider APIs and SDKs, dealing with partial failures, quota and permission errors and provider quirks.
- Own the billing and pay-as-you-go path: accurate metering, reconciled usage events and invoices, and a working free-user onboarding journey.
- Design data models and APIs that stay consistent across services and releases.
- Turn raw provider and scheduler errors into actionable messages for users, and add tests and observability.
- Collaborate with Platform, product and support teams, and document designs so the system does not depend on one person.
Required profile
- 4+ years building and operating production backend services, with real ownership of at least one.
- Strong Java and/or Groovy, with Micronaut, Spring Boot or similar.
- Hands-on experience with a major cloud provider's API for provisioning resources.
- Experience with Kubernetes where workloads actually run.
- Customer-facing production ownership, comfort with ambiguity and independence.
- Open to extensive use of AI in daily work.
Required skills
- REST API design and data modelling
- Cloud provider APIs (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- Nice to have: HPC/batch schedulers (Slurm, LSF, PBS, AWS Batch, Google Batch, Azure Batch), GPU workloads, billing platforms (Metronome, Stripe), observability (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK), CI/CD ownership, Angular, bioinformatics or Nextflow background, open-source contributions
What we offer
- Equity and private health and life insurance
- 23 vacation days per year, 3 days in December and public holidays
- Home office allowance valued over 1,000 USD, subscription to Oliva and a mental health app
- Annual learning and development budget of 1,000 USD
