Senior System Design Engineer - Power Conversion

About the role

Hitachi Energy is building and expanding its European regional office (ESOPC) in Madrid, within the Grid & Power Quality Solutions business. It is looking for an experienced Senior System Engineer with a strong background in power electronics, power systems and system simulations. The company's competence centre develops, manufactures, installs and commissions high-power electronic converters mainly for STATCOM and rail power supply systems, as well as hydro pump stations and grid interties.

Key responsibilities

• Design power electronic converter systems such as Static Frequency Converters (SFC) and Static Compensators (STATCOMs), from sales and tendering through to project execution, including occasional customer and site visits
• Own the system engineering scope throughout the project, working with Sales, other engineering departments, Project Management and Service
• Perform system design tasks: simulations (harmonics, transients), performance calculations, component specifications for sub-suppliers, control and protection definitions and design documentation
• Ensure compliance with standards, customer specifications and grid codes, and identify risks and propose mitigations
• Work with R&D teams on system design and modelling, define on-site performance measurements and share knowledge in conferences and committees

Required profile

• Master's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent, with a focus on Power Systems and Power Electronics
• Solid knowledge of power electronics and/or power systems with relevant industry experience
• Experience in hydropower or railways is a strong plus
• Fluent English; German or additional languages are an advantage
• Willingness to travel globally less than 10%
