Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Card) - Remote Spain

About the role

Affirm is reinventing credit cards by working directly with card issuers to create new types of cards with flexible terms. As Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Card), you will be the lead engineer for Affirm's EU teams, owning architecture across cards and relationships with EU counterparts. The role sits in Spain and is remote-first.

Key responsibilities

• Set the technical strategy for your team on a year-long horizon and tie it to critical, business-impacting projects.
• Act as lead software engineer for all cards in the EU.
• Work with product management, design and analytics so that risks and trade-offs are well understood.
• Define and advocate technical solutions and operational processes.
• Own team operations and availability: monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing and alerting.
• Set code review and design standards, and share them through writing and tech talks.
• Develop talent through feedback and guidance.
• On-call rotation is a requirement.

Required profile

• Total of 8+ years of experience as a software engineer.
• Experience delivering major features, system components or deprecating functionality through a technical and execution plan.
• Comfortable moving from low-level language idioms to the architecture of large systems.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Required skills

• Backend systems at scale: Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, Kubernetes.
• Front-end application development.
