T&D Primary High Voltage Substations Expert

About the role

AECOM is looking for an experienced T&D Primary High Voltage Substations Expert to join its Transmission & Distribution team. The role provides strategic technical oversight and leadership for the design and delivery of high-voltage substation infrastructure, covering AIS and GIS substations across transmission and distribution networks. It involves guiding engineering teams through project phases and working with multidisciplinary teams, project directors and clients on grid reinforcement, renewable integration and large-scale infrastructure programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical oversight for HV primary system design, including equipment layouts, busbar schemes and HV cable design, and review design decisions against standards and client specifications
• Oversee deliverables such as substation layouts and specifications, busbar configurations and conductor sizing, electrical clearances, insulation coordination, short-circuit calculations, lightning protection concepts, earthing and grounding systems
• Act as senior technical authority, coordinating primary, secondary, civil, structural and commissioning disciplines, and supporting project leaders in defining technical scope and delivery approach
• Maintain engagement with clients, contractors and suppliers, and support construction, installation, testing and commissioning, resolving complex site queries and field design changes
• Lead and mentor teams of primary substation engineers, fostering collaboration and high technical standards

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
• Typically 12-15+ years of experience in HV primary substation engineering
• Experience delivering large transmission or distribution substation projects across concept, FEED, detailed design and construction support
• Proven experience leading engineering teams or technical disciplines
• Nice to have: UK transmission or distribution substation experience, exposure to National Grid standards, EHV substation experience (220kV-400kV), CEng or equivalent, and construction/commissioning support experience
