Tunnelling & Geotechnical Modelling Engineer

About the role

AECOM is hiring a Tunnelling & Geotechnical Modelling Engineer interested in numerical models to join its Enterprise Capabilities team in Madrid. The team works on projects from feasibility studies through detailed design, with clients from the private and public sectors, including long-term Framework Agreements with Local Authorities and Design and Build commissions for major contractors. The role sits within the EC Europe team (Poland/Spain).

Key responsibilities

• Deliver numerical modelling analyses for ground engineering and tunnelling projects, mainly using FLAC3D and other specialised tools.
• Contribute to projects across concept, feasibility, detailed design and construction support phases.
• Work with multidisciplinary and international teams, collaborating with colleagues across Spain, Poland, South Africa and beyond.
• Take part in digitalisation initiatives, developing and implementing new modelling tools and workflows.
• Own defined project packages or smaller projects and ensure high-quality technical delivery.
• Prepare clear, technically robust engineering deliverables reviewed by senior engineers, check your own work and support peer reviews.
• Mentor and support junior engineers.

Required profile

• Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or a related field.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in ground engineering and/or tunnelling.
• Fluent English.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating in international teams.

Required skills

• Hands-on experience with numerical modelling tools (FLAC3D preferred).
• Strong understanding of soil/rock mechanics and geotechnical design principles.
• Computer programming skills (Python, Fish, MATLAB, etc.) are a plus.
