Senior Backend Engineer (AI focus)

About the role

Deel is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with a strong AI focus to join its R&D team. You will help shape the next generation of payroll and HR services by embedding intelligent capabilities directly into core backend workflows.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain backend services that integrate AI functionality into payroll processes.
• Collaborate with machine‑learning engineers and operations teams to deliver production‑ready AI‑powered tools.
• Build and optimise APIs for seamless interaction with internal and external systems.
• Handle unstructured data, create ETL pipelines, and ensure data quality for AI models.

Required profile

• 8+ years of professional experience in backend or full‑stack engineering.
• Proven expertise with JavaScript, Node.js and PostgreSQL.
• Strong background in API design and integration.
• Hands‑on experience integrating AI APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic) into production systems.
• Comfort working with messy data sources and building ETL workflows.
