Senior Fire & Life Safety Engineer

About the role

AECOM is seeking an experienced Senior Fire & Life Safety (FLS) Engineer to join its growing Fire Engineering team in Madrid. The engineer leads fire and life safety strategies for complex transportation, infrastructure and building projects, working with multidisciplinary teams across all project phases. Strong expertise in fire engineering, building regulations, activities licensing and legalisation, and national and international fire safety codes is required.

Key responsibilities

• Lead fire and life safety engineering design for transportation, infrastructure and complex building projects.
• Develop fire engineering strategies, fire safety reports and code compliance assessments.
• Define fire protection systems, means of escape, smoke control philosophies and life safety strategies.
• Review regulatory compliance against local regulations, building codes and international standards.
• Support activities licensing and legalisation with local authorities and approval agencies.
• Coordinate with architects, MEP, structural and systems disciplines to integrate fire safety into designs.
• Prepare technical specifications, design criteria, calculations and engineering reports.
• Take part in hazard identification, fire risk assessments, construction phase activities, design reviews and technical queries.
• Interface with clients, authorities having jurisdiction and stakeholders, and mentor junior engineers.
• Support business development, technical proposals and project planning.

Required profile

• Minimum mechanical degree; master's in Fire & Safety Engineering, industrial engineering or a related discipline preferred.
• Extensive experience in fire and life safety engineering within consultancy or design firms.
• Experience delivering fire engineering solutions for transportation buildings, infrastructure and/or tunnels.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Fluent English, written and spoken.
• Desirable: rail, metro, highway or airport infrastructure experience, and underground/tunnel fire safety experience.

Required skills

• Building regulations, fire codes and standards, and performance-based fire engineering.
• Fire protection systems, means of escape and smoke management.
• Technical reporting, specifications and engineering documentation.
• Desirable: CFD fire modelling (FDS, PyroSim or similar) and evacuation modelling (Pathfinder or similar).
