Senior Java Engineer - Core/Infra - Elasticsearch

About the role

Elastic is looking for a Senior Java Engineer to join its Elasticsearch team, which builds the shared platform infrastructure behind Elasticsearch. The team owns common functionality such as services, settings and scripting, and makes Elasticsearch extensible through plugins or the Painless scripting language. It also provides logging and telemetry, and owns orchestration of Elasticsearch in serverless, CI/CD workflows and delivery to customers on serverless, cloud and on-premise platforms. The engineer will be a strong individual contributor who also contributes to and leads cross-team projects.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to large projects that evolve the core infrastructure of Elasticsearch.
• Identify and develop opportunities for automation and integrate agentic apps into developer workflows.
• Design and implement new horizontally-scalable features and APIs.
• Solve difficult issues, including performance and concurrency problems.
• Improve operation and observability of Elasticsearch cloud systems.
• Collaborate with the Elasticsearch team, Elastic users and other open-source projects.
• Support support engineers and own operational investigations end-to-end until issues are resolved.

Required profile

• Experience crafting APIs and reasoning through trade-offs.
• Experience leading large-scale projects across engineering teams.
• Proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems and optimize code.
• Ability to own projects from start to finish, including technical design and collaboration on components.
• Ability to collaborate across functions and teams and work autonomously in a distributed team.

Required skills

• Core Java, including concurrency, parallelism and classloaders.
• Knowledge of JDK internals: modules, Java memory model, garbage collection, database load, caching.
• Algorithms and data structures.
• Bonus: CI/CD systems (Buildkite, Argo CD, GitOps), Java build tools (Gradle, Maven), OpenTelemetry, Go, containers and Kubernetes.

• Base salary of EUR 67,000 to 106,000, with no variable component.
