Frontend Manager (Video Streaming)

About the role

Rakuten TV, a video streaming platform backed by Rakuten Group, is looking for a Frontend Manager (Frontend Director) in Barcelona to lead all client-facing engineering across B2B and B2C, covering Smart TVs, mobile, web and whitelabel platforms. The role owns the full scope of client-side engineering, manages a team of about 10 engineers and leads, and reports directly to the CTO.

Key responsibilities

• Own technical strategy, architecture and delivery across all frontend platforms
• Manage and grow frontend engineers and leads across Mobile, CTVs and Web
• Align the roadmap between product, design and engineering
• Define and enforce engineering standards, code quality and testing strategy
• Own hiring, performance reviews and career development of direct and indirect reports
• Manage external vendor and CTV platform relationships and make final calls on architecture and platform decisions

Required profile

• 8+ years of hands-on frontend engineering (JavaScript/TypeScript, mobile or CTV), with at least 3 years in an engineering leadership role
• Proven experience managing multi-team frontend organisations as a people manager
• Experience with Smart TV application development and video streaming (HLS, DASH, DRM, ad integration)
• Ability to run long-term roadmaps, manage tech debt and represent engineering to stakeholders and executives
• Fluent in agile/scrum practices and experienced running cross-functional teams
• Background in a streaming or media company

• Playback: HLS/DASH/Smooth Streaming, PlayReady/Widevine, Shaka Player, hls.js
• Tooling: pnpm monorepo, Jest, Cypress, Playwright, Suitest, GitHub Actions
• Cloud providers, CDN, cloud object storage and serverless compute
