Senior Backend Engineer (Payments)

About the role

Join Proton’s Payments team as a Senior Backend Engineer and help build the backbone of a global subscription business. You will design and implement resilient backend services that enable users worldwide to pay for Proton’s privacy‑focused products.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain backend systems using PHP and Symfony.
• Integrate external payment, tax, and currency‑conversion providers.
• Collaborate closely with the Account, Finance, and Business Unit teams to align plans, promotions, and pricing.
• Contribute to open‑source client libraries written in React, Kotlin, Swift, and Rust.
• Migrate and operate infrastructure on Kubernetes within Proton’s on‑prem data centres.
• Ensure high availability and resilience of payment services.

Required profile

• Senior‑level backend engineering experience.
• Proven ability to build reliable, high‑performance services.
• Comfort working in a fast‑moving, impact‑focused environment.
• Strong collaboration skills across multiple product and finance teams.
