It suits someone with strong cloud-native experience, especially AWS and Databricks, who can lead engineers while staying hands-on with architecture, design and delivery.
Key responsibilities
- Lead, coach and mentor engineers, set engineering standards (code quality, testing, documentation, CI/CD) and support architecture reviews and prioritisation of platform improvements.
- Design, build and maintain scalable, resilient and secure platform capabilities on AWS and Databricks, including reusable services, patterns and frameworks.
- Drive lakehouse-oriented and event-driven architectures, automation and infrastructure-as-code approaches.
- Oversee data pipelines, ingestion frameworks and transformation workflows, and support scalable processing with Databricks, Spark and AWS services.
- Ensure data quality, observability, lineage and operational supportability, and partner with product and domain teams on shared platform capabilities.
- Use AWS services such as S3, Lambda, Glue, Step Functions, RDS, IAM and CloudWatch, embed security, compliance and governance, and improve monitoring, alerting, logging and incident response.
- Support cost management, developer experience, release processes and continuous improvement through retrospectives and metrics.
Required profile
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Significant experience in software, platform or data engineering, with proven senior or lead capacity.
- Proven experience building and supporting scalable data pipelines, distributed processing workloads and cloud-native platforms.
- Experience leading engineers and working in governed enterprise environments with security, risk and compliance awareness.
- Preferred: experience in financial services, insurance or pensions, shared platforms for multiple teams, data governance and lineage frameworks, and AWS or Databricks certifications.
Required skills
- AWS services, particularly storage, compute, orchestration, monitoring and security.
- Databricks or similar data lakehouse technologies, including notebooks, workflows and cluster management.
- Python and SQL; good understanding of Spark and distributed data processing.
- Data architecture, data modelling and lakehouse principles.
- Infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation or similar), Git, CI/CD, containerisation and workflow orchestration.
- Observability: logging, metrics, monitoring and alerting.
