Staff AI/ML Scientist (Conversational AI)

About the role

EcoVadis, a provider of business sustainability ratings, is looking for a Staff AI / Machine Learning Scientist focused on Conversational AI to join its growing AI Center of Excellence. The team turns simple text interfaces into goal-oriented, multi-step conversational agents covering areas such as sustainable procurement, supply chain resilience and decarbonisation. The role is hybrid in Barcelona (2 days per week in the office) or fully remote from Spain.

Key responsibilities

• Design and test multi-turn, state-aware conversational systems using LLM reasoning loops (e.g., ReAct, Plan-and-Solve) and multi-agent orchestration frameworks (LangGraph, AutoGen or custom state machines)
• Adapt new frameworks and advances in generative and agentic AI
• Promote AI/ML best practices, mentor junior team members and lead functional teams and initiatives on Conversational AI
• Build, benchmark and maintain AI/ML models using Python, MLflow, Azure stack (Azure cloud, Azure ML, Azure Data Factory) and Databricks
• Work closely with customers to understand their needs and recommend solutions
• Follow AI technology trends and apply them to EcoVadis's challenges

Required profile

• PhD or Master's degree in a quantitative discipline (Statistics/Applied Math, AI, Computer Science, Computational Linguistics)
• 8+ years of experience in machine learning and NLP, with at least 4+ years in Conversational AI in production environments
• Proven track record building autonomous or semi-autonomous agentic systems at scale
• Experience leading end-to-end AI initiatives and mentoring others
• Cross-functional collaboration with engineers and product managers; experience with conversational interfaces over enterprise domains (Supply Chain, Procurement, Financial Risk) is a plus
• Publications in top-tier NLP/AI venues (ACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, AAAI, KDD) are a plus
