Senior II Back-End Engineer

About the role

Preply is looking for a Senior II Back‑End Engineer to drive technical direction across multiple squads and build the systems that power its global growth engine. You will shape scalable backend services, partner with product and engineering leaders, and help millions of learners connect with tutors worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Own and shape technical direction across several engineering squads.
• Lead complex, ambiguous initiatives from concept to delivery, aligning engineers, product managers and stakeholders.
• Design, build and evolve scalable backend systems using Python/Django, data pipelines and third‑party integrations.
• Partner with PMs, EMs and senior stakeholders to define roadmaps, make trade‑offs and guide investment decisions.
• Raise the engineering bar through mentoring, architectural reviews and best‑practice adoption.
• Drive reliability, observability, performance and operational excellence across services.
• Participate in on‑call rotation (one week every five weeks).

Required profile

• Experience with architectural patterns of large, high‑scale web applications (well‑designed APIs, high‑volume data pipelines, efficient algorithms).
• Proven track record leading complex, greenfield projects end‑to‑end and setting engineering standards.
• Strong communication skills in English (B2+) with ability to influence senior peers and leadership.
• Hands‑on experience with Agentic AI and ability to incorporate AI as a thought partner in development workflows.
