AI Architect - Generative AI

About the role

Cigna Healthcare is seeking an AI Architect to drive the architecture, design and adoption of enterprise-grade Generative AI (GenAI) solutions across Cigna International Health. The role defines end-to-end GenAI architectures, sets enterprise standards and reference patterns, and works closely with product, security, privacy, legal and cloud engineering teams in regulated environments.

Key responsibilities

• Define blueprints, reference architectures and design patterns for LLM-based applications, covering model access, orchestration, retrieval, prompt management, evaluation and observability.
• Translate business and product needs into AI architectures that balance innovation, reliability, cost and risk.
• Advise senior leadership on AI strategy, feasibility and adoption paths.
• Architect knowledge bases and RAG systems, and establish agentic AI patterns with multi-step reasoning, tool use and human-in-the-loop controls.
• Guide teams on prompt engineering, context management and response grounding, and help evaluate commercial LLMs and SaaS AI platforms.
• Design secure AI gateway and model access layers, including authentication, authorization, rate limiting, logging and auditability, and integrate GenAI into existing enterprise systems.
• Recommend layered guardrails, embed responsible AI principles, and partner with security, privacy, legal and compliance teams on governance and emerging AI regulations.
• Drive GenAI initiatives for developer productivity, operational efficiency and customer experience, mentor engineers and contribute to communities of practice.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning or a related field.
• 10+ years building and architecting large-scale software or AI systems in medium-to-large enterprises.
• 5+ years with AI/ML, NLP or Generative AI.
• Experience in regulated or compliance-sensitive environments such as healthcare, finance, insurance or global enterprises.
• Strong communication skills to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Required skills

• Large language models, embeddings, prompt engineering, RAG, multimodal embeddings and agentic workflows (including MCP concepts).
• AI gateway design, vector databases and semantic search, document intelligence platforms (e.g. Azure Form Recognizer, AWS Textract, Google Document AI) and IDP solutions.
• Workflow orchestration frameworks such as LangChain or LangGraph, OCR, NLP and entity linking.
• Responsible AI: prompt-injection mitigation, content safety, human-in-the-loop, observability and LLMOps.
• Cloud platforms (Azure, AWS or GCP), secure API design, IAM, networking, CI/CD and global deployment.
