Applied AI Engineer, Codex

About the role

OpenAI's Applied AI Engineering team helps organizations turn frontier AI capabilities into safe, reliable production systems. As an Applied AI Engineer focused on Codex, you will partner with engineering leaders and developers to design, build and deploy AI systems that change how software is developed, from workflow selection and prototyping through production rollout and scaled adoption. The role is based in the Madrid office, with a hybrid model of 3 days in the office per week and relocation assistance for new employees.

Key responsibilities

• Work with engineering leaders and developers to turn high-value opportunities into technical architectures, implementation plans, evaluation strategies and success criteria.
• Design and deploy AI-powered workflows that improve planning, writing, testing, reviewing, debugging and delivery of software.
• Build prototypes, evaluation harnesses, reference implementations, integrations, automations and production accelerators, often using Codex in your own development.
• Help customers move from experiments to reliable production workflows and sustained developer adoption.
• Design systematic evaluation approaches using representative tasks, automated graders, production signals and developer feedback.
• Make technical decisions on models, agents, tools, environments, reliability, observability, latency, cost, safety, security and operational readiness.
• Diagnose complex issues, reproduce failures and lead technical deep dives and workshops.
• Gather deployment insights and turn them into product proposals, model feedback and technical requirements for Product, Research and Engineering.
• Create reusable architectures, tooling, examples, guides and patterns, including contributions to the OpenAI Cookbook.

Required profile

• Demonstrated track record of delivering software or AI systems in enterprise environments, from prototype to production.
• Substantial personal contributions in code, architecture, evaluation, debugging, integrations or production engineering.
• Fluent English and Spanish.
• Deep prior experience with OpenAI products is not required.

Required skills

• Highly proficient in Python; JavaScript, TypeScript or another language is valuable.
• Active user of AI coding tools with a strong point of view on developer productivity.
• Ability to evaluate AI coding systems and handle enterprise production requirements such as reliability, observability, security, privacy, data governance, performance and cost.
