Compliance Manager, MLRO

About the role

Airwallex is setting up a Spanish Branch Office of its Dutch-licensed e-money institution, Airwallex NL, to support its expansion in Spain and Southern Europe. As Manager, Financial Crime Compliance and Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) for the Spanish Branch, you will support the launch and ongoing compliance of the branch from a financial crime, regulatory and governance perspective, acting as the designated MLRO and Representante ante el SEPBLAC.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as the local contact for SEPBLAC and Banco de España on branch supervision, notifications and inspections, and support the branch notification and approval process with Spanish authorities.
• Keep the branch within its approved perimeter and advise on Spain-based sales, marketing and account management.
• Ensure Spanish AML/CTF and sanctions requirements are reflected in local policies, procedures, training and reporting, and commission the periodic external expert review of the branch AML programme.
• Oversee identification, escalation and reporting of suspicious activity to SEPBLAC, and give MLRO input on customer exits, account restrictions and law enforcement requests.
• Act as embedded compliance partner for the Spanish commercial and sales team, advising on product use cases and complex client engagements.
• Report regularly to senior management and Group Risk Committees, maintain the branch risk assessment under RD 304/2014, and respond to supervisory enquiries and audits.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Law, Finance, Business or a related field (preferred).
• 5+ years of financial crime compliance experience, including as an MLRO or Representante ante el SEPBLAC in a regulated financial institution, payment institution or fintech in Spain or the EU/EEA.
• Sound knowledge of Spanish AML/CTF obligations under Ley 10/2010 and RD 304/2014, the role of SEPBLAC, the OCI framework and Banco de España's oversight of payment institutions.
