Internship – Continuum Damage Mechanics, Aerospace Engineering

About the role

Airbus is offering a curricular practicum internship for students in their final year of an aerospace engineering degree, based in Getafe, Spain. The internship runs from February to July 2027, part-time (5 hours per day, 25 hours per week, 8h-13h), and includes a tutor assigned for continuous monitoring. The student joins the Advanced Simulation for Rear Fuselage and Empennage (RFE) team, which handles advanced structural simulations and contributes to automating structural processes for Airbus commercial aircraft.

Key responsibilities

• Develop new advanced methodologies for structural analysis
• Develop virtual testing simulation capabilities
• Contribute to novelty structural justification processes and justify real airframe designs (composite and metal)
• Work on improving anisotropic constitutive modeling for ductile metallic failure, from coupon to component level
• Carry out a final project (TFG) covering: introduction and motivation, literature review and selection of a solution, theoretical and technical development and implementation, verification and validation against coupon and assembly tests, application to a real structure with virtual testing, and conclusions and future developments
• The proposed solution will be implemented for FEM simulations in ABAQUS or similar software

Required profile

• Degree in Aerospace Engineering
• English at minimum B2 (C1 desirable); Spanish at minimum B1
• Basic knowledge of structural analysis and continuum solid mechanics
• Ability to work in an international environment

Required skills

• Recommended: basic knowledge of Python and Fortran programming
• Advantageous: basic knowledge of finite element simulation (FEM), especially in ABAQUS
• Valued: programming (Fortran, Python, Matlab, etc.), FEM modelling and postprocessing, analytical and problem-solving skills, teamwork and collaboration
