Senior Data Engineer – Drug Development Data Platform

About the role

AstraZeneca's R&D IT Data & Analytics team is hiring a Senior Data Engineer for its Drug Development Data Platform (3DP) in Barcelona, working onsite three days a week. You will contribute to solution development and testing, give technical guidance and share responsibility for delivery, while also communicating progress and expectations with stakeholders. The role works almost exclusively on the AWS data platform and supports systems that make clinical trial data available through scalable, cloud-based ETLs.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, enhance and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines for efficient data ingestion and processing.
• Design, develop and maintain REST APIs for system integration.
• Tune SQL queries and ETL pipelines for performance and identify opportunities for efficiency and automation.
• Investigate data issues, analyse end-to-end pipelines and resolve them with users.
• Support data, design, product and executive teams with technical data questions.
• Maintain the AWS base infrastructure and the front-end application, and document development best practices.
• Offer technical guidance across the software development lifecycle, including cost-reduction opportunities in production services.

Required profile

• Solid development skills with practical knowledge of Python, Git and versioning.
• Hands-on experience in the AWS ecosystem and a DevOps-first approach, with GitHub / GitHub Actions (or similar).
• Experience triaging and resolving tickets and working in a globally distributed team.
• Ability to design and document best practices, and to provide technical guidance within data and analytics teams.
• Good interpersonal skills and comfort partnering with business colleagues.
• Desirable: Agile experience (e.g. Jira), Power BI, AI code-generation awareness, Terraform (IaC), Iceberg, Glue and/or Hive.
