Senior Software Engineer, AI-Native Development

About the role

AstraZeneca is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Evinova business in Barcelona, Spain. This is an in-office role with a minimum of three days per week on site, with no remote or travel flexibility. The engineer writes production code daily, owns features end to end, designs backend services and frontend experiences, integrates AI capabilities into the product, and helps set engineering standards for AI-assisted development.

Key responsibilities

• Write clean, tested, production-ready code across backend and frontend, owning features from design through deployment and monitoring.
• Design and implement LLM-powered workflows, intelligent automation and AI-driven user experiences, including prompt engineering patterns, evaluation frameworks and testing strategies.
• Build scalable backend and BFF services, RESTful and GraphQL APIs and data streaming pipelines.
• Contribute to React and React Native applications when full-stack ownership is needed.
• Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis and improve monitoring and resilience.
• Work with the platform team on infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipelines, automated deployment and recovery, and container orchestration.
• Apply disciplined engineering practices in regulated environments and generate evidence for validation.
• Review code substantively, mentor peers in AI-assisted development and contribute to agile planning and retrospectives.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience shipping production systems.
• Daily practical experience using AI-assisted development tools and the ability to explain how they change design, writing, testing and review.
• Experience building or integrating AI/LLM features into production applications.
• Familiarity with regulated or compliance-sensitive software development environments.

Required skills

• Backend language such as Java or Node.js, and frontend technologies such as TypeScript, React and React Native.
• RESTful and GraphQL APIs, HTTP, JSON and OpenAPI.
• Document-based storage (MongoDB or similar) and data streaming (Kafka or similar).
• CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps or similar) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
• AWS cloud services and strong testing discipline (unit, integration, BDD with Cucumber or similar).
• Desirable: agentic AI systems, clinical trial software, eCOA, medical devices, GxP or SaMD validation, and open-source contributions.
