Onboard Safety-Critical Firmware and Software Engineer

About the role

Airbus Defence and Space is looking for an Onboard Safety-Critical Firmware and Software Engineer in Getafe (Madrid). The selected candidate joins the Air Refueling & Cargo Loading Software Department, which develops, integrates, verifies and certifies safety-critical onboard computing systems for air refueling applications. The team works with multidisciplinary engineering teams and complies with aeronautical safety standards such as RTCA DO-254 and DO-178B/C (DAL A/B).

Key responsibilities

• Define and manage firmware and software requirements for safety-critical onboard computing platforms in the Air Refueling domain.
• Design and develop safety-critical firmware, mainly using FPGA technology and VHDL, in line with RTCA DO-254 DAL A/B requirements.
• Perform hardware, firmware and software integration testing, including verification, simulations, technical reviews and analysis.
• Contribute to the development and verification of safety-critical software under RTCA DO-178B/C DAL A/B.
• Support hardware and software certification by preparing technical evidence and demonstrating compliance to the relevant authorities.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the development lifecycle, ensuring quality, traceability, documentation and continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Degree in Telecommunications, Electronic, Computer, Industrial or Aeronautical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Hands-on experience in firmware/software development, especially FPGA-based systems and safety-critical applications; experience under DO-254 DAL A/B is highly relevant.
• English suitable for an international engineering environment.

Required skills

• FPGA, CPLD and VHDL (Xilinx and Altera), C/C++ and embedded software.
• Hardware verification and simulation with ModelSim, Questa or Xilinx ISim.
• DO-254 and DO-178B/C, integration testing, structural coverage, static timing analysis and design constraints.
• Modeling and model-based tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, UML, SysML and SCADE.
• Git and Bitbucket; version control and continuous integration.
• Nice to have: NI VeriStand, LabVIEW, Xilinx ILA, MATLAB scripting, Python, test automation, HDL Coder, HDL Verifier, RTOS, ARINC 653, Agile/Scrum/Kanban, SoC co-design.
