Senior Backend Engineer (Python / FastAPI) - Scrum Master

About the role

Roche Diagnostics Solutions (RDS), part of Roche's Computational Science & Informatics division, is looking for an experienced Backend Python Engineer/Scrum Master to build robust, scalable APIs and services for its digital products in the life sciences sector. The role works closely with the Frontend/UX team and Data Scientists to design the backend infrastructure for complex bioinformatics and machine learning data. It is an on-site position in Sant Cugat del Vallès, with no relocation assistance.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain high-performance, asynchronous backend services and robust RESTful APIs.
• Architect, deploy and manage scalable, secure cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
• Design database schemas, manage data relationships, run migrations and optimise queries for large datasets.
• Build and maintain data pipelines that ingest, normalise and process scientific and bioinformatics data.
• Write clean, testable code, implement automated testing and maintain CI/CD pipelines.
• Partner with the UX/Frontend team on API integrations and help bring machine learning models into production.
• Scrum Master (20%): act as a servant leader, remove blockers, apply Agile techniques and increase transparency.

Required profile

• 5+ years of software engineering experience, primarily in Python.
• Strong fundamentals in API design and building/scaling RESTful systems.
• Proven experience building and managing scalable cloud infrastructure, preferably with IaC.
• Ability to take ownership of problems end-to-end in ambiguous environments.
• Nice to have: life sciences domain knowledge (sequencing, PCR, bioinformatics, digital healthcare), AWS HealthOmics experience, and background in large, globally distributed enterprise environments.

Required skills

• Core stack: FastAPI, PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy, Alembic, AWS (S3, Aurora, Fargate, Lambda, CDK), pytest, NumPy.
• Scrum Master: first-level certification (CSM, PSM I) and at least two years acting as Scrum Master for a Scrum team.
• Servant leadership, facilitation, conflict resolution and continual improvement.
